There is a very powerful word in your vocabulary, and you are privileged enough to learn and use this word at a very young age. However, as you get older you begin to experience things that prevent you from using this word. In this blog, I want to talk about the power of using the word No and a couple of the reasons why we don’t use the word as much as we should.
Using the power of No is a lost art in our society today. This is mainly because people are pressured into doing things that they don’t want to do. This pressure mainly comes from two sources. Let’s detail them so that you can get a better understanding of these sources and how to combat them the next time they appear in your life.
Peer Pressure is all about influence. It is the influence of a peer group, observers or individual exerts that encourages others to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors to conform to groups. What makes Peer Pressure so effective is our own wants and needs as humans. What I mean is that , we all want to be liked. We all want acceptance. We all want friends. And because of our needs, we allow Peer Pressure to shape our usage of the word No, all in an effort to be accepted and liked.
Self-Pressure is another principle that prevents us from using the word No. It originates from our Ego. Self-Pressure is the Ego’s way of holding ourselves to unrealistic and often uncomfortable standards. Your Ego wants everything. It wants to be the smartest, prettiest, most successful person to ever live. It holds your actions hostage to its thoughts. Your Ego makes you think that you should say yes to everything because in its world – everything is an opportunity. And, I do believe that everything is an opportunity. It just may not be an opportunity for you, but for someone else.
We have a choice to make whenever we are faced with a path to follow in life. To be strong and focused in life means that we have to be willing to stand up for ourselves and use our natural power against Peer and Self-Pressure. Power lies in the word No and if we use it appropriately and effectively with others and with ourselves – we can surely obtain our personal goals.
Inspired Point of Power: No.
